Claire

I stare at the intertwined and very nude couple in front of me.

The man presses himself against the woman's back, one of his arms snaking around her body to allow him access to her exposed breasts. Her neck is tilted, revealing a creamy expanse of flesh at her throat while his mouth hovers seductively over her skin. Her lips are parted and I can nearly hear their small moans of pleasure. The man’s thighs are powerful, thick with defined muscles. The woman is smaller, but still voluptuous with her rounded curves.

There are so many things I love about erotic Victorian art. I love how surprising it is, how at odds with traditional notions of Victorian society. I love how titillating it is, but also how intimate. I love knowing that when you peel back the curtain of Victorian restraint, there is lush excess hiding beneath.

But in this moment, in this painting in particular, I love that people back then knew how to appreciate a woman with a soft and full body. Not like today’s standards where you’re deemed plus size if you’re over a size twelve. It’s ridiculous. Most plus size models have flat stomachs, they’re just tall and more filled out than the waifish super models.

Or maybe I’m just still feeling the effects of last night’s tacos and queso.

Is it possible that since moving back to Texas after so many years abroad I’ve indulged in my favorite Tex-Mex a little too often? Yes. Yes, it is
