Leeara stood in front of the mirror examining her hair, marvelling at the peculiar changes since her return from her visit with Jarat. An icy blue was drastically overwhelming the red, and her hair was growing at a substantial rate, already to her waist. Rhynn leaned in through the open bathroom door, watching her watch herself. Looks fantastic, he said. She critiqued her short black dress, barely covering her stockings and garters, and her matching simple black blouse cut low, half revealing the cinnamon-colored skin of her breasts. She had chosen a red ribbon collar with a small ruby for a splash of color. She was keeping things simple tonight, not really feeling like going in the first place. She just wanted this business sorted as soon as possible. Parties were hardly on her mind just now.

Lee smiled at him through the reflection in the mirror. He handed her another glass of water. She accepted it eagerly and emptied the contents in one gulp. Another change since accepting the Willow seed was her unquenchable thirst . . . and an increase in her other hungers. She glanced at Rhynn again. One other change. Rhynn had become a little reserved. He was struggling with something he wasn’t sharing. Even if he wasn’t hiding something from her, she didn’t like that he felt he couldn’t talk to her about it. Her return had been strained for both of them. She found a demon was visiting Rhynn, and Rhynn had been told she would have to leave him or die trying to cross the Veil with her. Now wasn’t the time to harbor secrets. An air of doubt and mistrust has plagued her happy world, and it angered her. Where was Leander? It had been four days since she had accepted the seed. She only had a couple weeks to figure this all out before she had to cross over again. With demons and Descended wandering around and mucking about claiming to help Rhynn, Lee could not shake a foreboding sense of concern. For her, for Rhynn and for her kin’s fate.

Seeing the look in her eyes, Rhynn stepped in behind her and wrapped his arms around her narrow shoulders in his thick-muscled arms. She never felt safer than when she was with him, never alone. And yet, when she closed her eyes at night, she used to dream happy little dreams of her and Rhynn and a future together. Now she dreamed of her homelands, and her days were spent longing to return. If she could not return with Rhynn beside her, she didn’t know how she’d survive. She could not deny her desire to return home, though. She told herself it was because of the instinct instilled in her from the seed. Jarat had warned her she’d be compelled, though she had not expected it to be so soon, so demanding.

Then again, she had longed to return as soon as she had crossed over, before she had even accepted the damn thing.

Rhynn placed his hand over her belly and leaned over her shoulder as if looking for a baby bump. How does one care fore a Tree Child, anyway?
