Foreword
I was born in Selma, California on October 6, 1971. It was fall. The leaves had begun turning bright orange, brick red, golden like mustard, and even shades of brown and deep bronze. My mother was a tall, slender, golden, light-skinned woman with a toothy smile, gentle disposition and the youthful innocence of a sixteen-year-old girl. Even in her youth and innocence, she had the intuition to know it was time for my arrival and went to tell my grandmother, It’s time.

My mom insisted it was time again. She finished up with her nightly routine of washing dishes, rolling her hair, and drove my mom, Donna, to the Fowler hospital. Unfortunately, there was no doctor working at the time. It was approximately 11:30 at night. My mother knew I was on my way. She didn’t let the news deter her. They simply thought to drive to the next closest hospital, which was in Selma, California, about twelve minutes away. When
