    Foreword

I was born in Selma, California on October 6, 1971. It was fall. The leaves had begun turning bright orange, brick red, golden like mustard, and even shades of brown and deep bronze. Unfortunately, there was no doctor working at the time. It was approximately 11:30 at night. My mother knew I was on my way. She didn’t let the news deter her. They simply thought to drive to the next closest hospital, which was in Selma, California, about twelve minutes away. When
