The next year of my life was one of the happiest I could remember. 

While Lissa didn’t exactly move in with us, she did spend an inordinate amount of time at our place. The house Gwen and I owned was only twenty minutes away from Lissa’s parents’ place, the house she had grown up in. My parents had moved to a different community, still close by but not in the same neighborhood.

Lissa was welcome anytime. It was good our kids got along well together because their parents were having a lot of sex without the kiddos knowing. But kids are often clueless as long as they and their parents are happy.

The legal case against Josh never went anywhere. He was banned from that hotel. He and Lissa broke up. He seemed like the sort of guy who was a vindictive asshole but aside from some snide remarks on the growing phenomena of social media, he essentially dropped out of her life. That was for the best. 

The police and courts opted not to prosecute him because he was a white guy with a stable income. As it was, the case against him was primarily a complaint from the hotel and some vague abuse that Lissa refused to bring to the authorities.

It was okay. We sheltered her in our place.

Whenever Lissa didn’t have her daughter for the weekend, she was at our place. We asked a few times about the father, but she just said he was out of the picture and barely had contact with his own child. It was the other set of grandparents that had nominal custody.
