    Danny sat at the old Formica table in the kitchen, and Kelsey sat across from him. He put his elbows on the table and rested his head in the palms of his hands while raking his fingers through his hair, staring blankly at the mysterious note that had been thrown onto his porch just minutes ago. Was there really any hope for his fresh start now? Why was this happening to him? This was not the quiet life the police back in New York had promised him.

    Kelsey wore concern on her face as Danny became enveloped in his thoughts

    Danny, are you—

    This has to be some sort of joke, Danny interrupted and threw his hands in the air.

    Danny, I truly hope it is, but I can’t think of anyone who would play such a prank. I know nearly everyone in town, and no one has ever been known to do anything like this, Kelsey responded quietly.

    Danny remained silent. He buried his face back in his hands. Kelsey attempted to place her hand on Danny's shoulder to comfort him, but before she could do so, he launched himself out of his green vinyl chair and started pacing the kitchen, covering his mouth with one hand and resting his elbow in the other.

    Why did I have to get stuck with this stupid house? Danny bemoaned. I expected to come here to live a quiet life, but the universe just had to throw me the biggest curveball of the century and give me this cursed house.

    Kelsey stood up and rested her hand on Danny’s shoulder. Hey, it's going to be okay, she said softly, trying to comfort him, We’ll figure out who did this, okay? Maybe you’re right, and it was just some cruel joke. Let’s not assume the worst. Maybe we should go out to get some dinner to clear our heads.

    The soft touch of Kelsey’s hand calmed Danny down. He cracked a half-smile and nodded in agreement. Kelsey smiled in return, and Danny nearly blushed when he caught himself staring at her.
