The old abandoned barn was silent save for the sound of the decaying wood groaning in the breeze. The air was musty and smelled of freshly spent gunpowder. Kelsey, Buck, and Bethany stared at Danny, waiting for his explanation of what had just happened.
Danny sat on the ground with his arms around his knees, staring blankly at the floor, choosing his words carefully.
Just as Danny was about to speak, he was interrupted by a cough that came from behind him. As if by reflex, Danny grabbed his gun off the floor and bolted toward Apollo. He was still alive but fading fast. Apollo laid on his side, coughing up blood and bellowing dreadful moans. Danny kneeled and placed the barrel of his gun on Apollo’s temple.
Okay, Apollo, I want some answers, and I want them now,
Danny shouted, his hands trembling with anger.
Apollo chuckled, and he spat up more blood. What could you possibly want from a dead man?
he said mockingly in a thick Greek accent.
You and Ernesto were tracking me. Who else knows where I am? Who else knows the boss sent you to kill me?
Danny asked. Now, Buck, Bethany, and Kelsey were standing just behind him.
Apollo smirked weakly, obviously struggling to stay alive, let alone speak. To your great fortune, no one,
he replied strenuously. Ernesto was so consumed with killing you himself; he wouldn't tell anyone else about it. Of course, the boss will know we failed when we don’t fail to report back, but he won't know where we stopped tracking you.
Danny closed his eyes and sighed in relief. His fear of being hunted by his past demons had begun to fade.
Danny, do you think they had anything to do with the note last night?
Kelsey inquired.
Apollo shifted his weak gaze from Danny to Kelsey.
