ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Since our children are Army Brats,
only God knows the people who have impacted their lives. Pastors, Sunday School teachers, scout leaders, school teachers, coaches, and other adults have poured gold into their lives. To them, we are forever thankful.
It is wonderful to see our fledglings become wonderful, godly, contributing adults who are raising our grandchildren by the Bible.
FOREWORD
Raised in a small rural community in central Michigan as the next youngest of seven children by a widowed mother, Es Westmoreland is a remarkable Christian lady. I continue to be amazed even today by her non-stop unveiling of talents and abilities. I can certainly attest that she is a person who knows what she is writing about!
After Es graduated from high school, she worked her way through business school where she earned her Executive Secretarial degree. She moved with her company to Dallas, where we met at a party while I was in training as an Army officer. Following a long-distance romance, we married. She then began the ever-moving and ever-changing trek as an Army wife. As I was promoted and given more responsible positions, I was often gone for extended periods—sometimes many months. Each time I left, Es assumed the roles of both mother and father without complaint.
Over a ten-year period, we had four children. Early on, we noticed that none of those little bundles of joy came with an instruction manual on how to raise them to maturity. Each of the children presented different challenges in not only getting them into this world, but also through the stages of childhood, teenage, college, early adulthood, and life to this day. We found that our roles changed over time from parent to advisor, if asked. We love them so much and do our best at keeping in touch regardless of the distance involved. The credit for raising our children well is largely hers even though I was present and helped when I could.
Each of our four grown and married children are wonderful and remarkable, both as spouses and parents. The older three graduated from Texas A&M, and our youngest from the Naval Academy. Our three sons served their country as officers in the Army and Navy. Our daughter served as well by supporting our son-in-law Naval officer.
In addition to being a mother, Es packed up and moved to new locations more than twenty-three times over the course of my military career. Wherever she landed, she immediately set about to become a member of the community. A high priority was to find a church for our growing family. Regardless of location, she quickly became involved in working with children. While I was stationed at the Pentagon, Es served on the Vestry at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax, VA. Following my military assignment to Houston, TX, she was ordained an Associate Pastor and served as Youth Pastor for several years.
In summary, Es Westmoreland is a veteran mother who has been there, done that.
She knows what she is talking about and is a person well worth reading and considering as you raise your own royalty!

INTRODUCTION
My graduating high school class motto has shaped my life. It was a game changer for me at that time, and it still directs me. This quote shows us a great way to live. I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
¹
In doing my best in a world that seems to have forgotten God’s way for our lives, I believe this motto to be a strong guide that helps others in what the Bible says about raising children.
If you are just beginning your adventure with young children,
