    The sky darkened, causing me to look up and try to work out if it was going to stay dry, or if we were about to be subjected to a storm of some kind. With the nip in the air, it was probably that any rain would come down as snow, and while I'd once thought of it snowing as a magical seasonal experience, I'd come to a different understanding of what the weather truly meant during the past few years.

    And even more so when I knew that the plants in front of me might not survive the coming winter.

    I looked around for Matisse, but couldn't see the frost nymph anywhere in sight. Hopefully, that was a good thing and it meant that the next few hours weren't going to be a risk to the tea plants.

    Then again, perhaps he wasn't here because he'd exhausted himself trying to keep the cold away from the crops. I couldn't see Amelia either, which meant that my fellow tea witch was likely looking after him. A job she particularly seemed to enjoy.

    I kneeled down in front of the small tea bush. Before the apocalypse, I'd never touched a tea plant in real life, and I was pretty sure I'd only ever seen them in photos too. But now it was different. The Purple Oasis plantation meant that I got to feel the leaves through my fingers every day, and that I was important to the care of the precious resource. Tending to the plants didn't give me the same surge of power from being on the field as when I drank tea, but I could still feel the magic in the plantation, even with all the plants wrapped up for winter. Or maybe that was just my imagination because I knew how important the plants were to the oasis and to tea witches like me.
