    PART I

    A Vow Taken

    Chapter 1

It was the year 1925. Everyone was jubilant, the world war had been over for a few years and finally materials were available. It was very cold on the plains north of Lake Superior. This area in Canada was sparsely populated. You could see for miles and still not come across a house. Their house was part home, grocery, post office and meeting place. The store was out front with the living quarters in the back. The bedrooms were upstairs. The only people they saw were those that came to the store to shop, pick up mail, and the monthly meetings. With not only the store to manage, they also had a small garden. It was a comfortable living for the family, even though a bit lonely. Mary and her younger brother Carl always had their chores and each other to play with but not many other kids. They couldn’t wait for Christmas that year as their dad had promised them a sled. And there it was on Christmas morning, a shiny new sled that their dad had made. But first they had their chores to do. While their mom ran the store, their dad made regular deliveries and picked up supplies for the store. This left some of the housekeeping chores to the kids. Finally, they were free to try out their new sled. They bundled up and out they went. They pulled the sled up small hill to try their first run. Together they flew down that hill. How wonderful that was. It was like flying. At the bottom, Carl said, Mary lets go again. Yes, She replied and started to get up. Mary, come on, get up Carl urged. I can’t, she wailed. I can’t move. Get Mama".

After her mother carried Mary back into the house, she told Carl to get their father and the doctor. This took quite a while as the distances were long and horse travel slow. Meanwhile Anna got her daughter out of her wet clothes from laying in the snow so long. She checked on how much movement Mary still had. She was dismayed that there was none but didn’t show it. Mary knew that something was not right, as she didn’t want her mother to feel any worse. Suddenly, there was a noise out in the store. Anna rushed out to see who it was as it was too soon for her husband and doctor. But it was. I was at a neighbor’s house seeing another child and I hope this isn’t the same thing. His words sent a chill to Anna’s heart and she prayed for her child.

    In silence, the doctor
