Summary of Never Give an Inch By Mike Pompeo - Willie M. Joseph
Foreword
Pompeo's new book documents the four years of the Trump administration on behalf of everyday Americans. It's told from the perspective of Pompeo, who served as America's CIA director and secretary of state. Every time, he would say the same thing: Put your head down, work hard, and good things will follow
. He was fully prepared for his role as CIA director and secretary of state. In high school, my dad would often distribute his own pop quizzes, usually around eight on Saturday mornings.
You won't be able to grasp global issues if you can't even point out the countries on a map,
he would say. Blix was the UN weapons inspector leading the monitoring and inspection of Iraq's weapons arsenal. As a teenager, I was fascinated by my father's passion and deep understanding of the world and America's place in it. I came to revere his ferocious and dogged work ethic, whether he was running his company, fighting for Kansans, or teaching fifth-graders.
Words from Kim Hak-song
Kim Hak-song: I was accused of blaspheming the dignity of the supreme leader, considered the most serious crime in North Korea. On May 9, 2018, an inspector of the prison told me to pack my bags and I waited like an animal waiting to be taken to the slaughterhouse. Kim Hak-song was held by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) for more than two years before being freed. He says he survived because he is an American, even though he is not good at English. America is the country that gave him true freedom!
Introduction
Pompeo is the only person ever to serve as both America's most senior diplomat and head of its premier espionage agency. Growing up, Pompeo never dreamed of such a future for himself. His mother, Dorothy Mercer Pompeo, was the most decent woman I have ever known. CIA Director Mike Hayden: America is where grinders of no special background or privilege can rise like nowhere else. American greatness depends only in part on great Americans, he says.
He says leaders must be prepared to put their nation first and honor our American principles and history. As a cadet, I learned how to follow and to lead. As the senior leader of two small businesses, I shouldered the responsibility of running complex organizations. In 2010, voters elected me to the US House of Representatives as part of a conservative wave. Leading intelligence warriors was the finest experience of my life.
Pompeo: I've now been sanctioned by Iran, Russia, and China, which means I don't have vacation plans for Tehran, Moscow, or Beijing
. President Donald Trump's administration accomplished more than any administration in American history, writes outgoing Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry: We imposed crushing pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran, executed shrewd diplomacy to avert a nuclear crisis with North Korea and held the banner of international religious freedom higher than ever
. Secretary of State John Kerry: I never gave an inch on the things that mattered most
. Kerry: It would have been immoral and unfaithful to relinquish a once-in-a-lifetime stewardship of power. I'd do it all again with no second thoughts.
Find the Risk-Takers
CIA Director Mike Pompeo's mission was a secret, known only to a few. His objective was to correct the failed efforts of the past that had not eliminated North Korea's nuclear weapons. Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea, to meet with Chairman Kim Jong Un. CIA Director John Brennan left his guns on the plane with Kim Yong Chol. Chol is one of the nastiest men Brennan has ever encountered.
Like other kleptomaniac North Korean elites, he was drinking top-shelf booze and dining on Wagyu beef. I was worried that the DPRK would use the trip for propaganda,
says John Defterios. I wasn't interested in whatever the hell a North Korean Sea World looked like
. In 2000, Secretary of State Madeline Albright had gone to meet with Kim Jong Il and was taken on a tour by dolphins. North Koreans had posted a line of stern-faced soldiers, standing at attention in immaculate ranks, gripping massive machine guns.
Standing there to escort us inside was Chairman Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong. Given the Kim family's history of killing each other, we couldn't be sure who we'd see. Pompeo says the dictator tried to break the ice with a joke about assassination.
LEADERSHIP MEANS TAKING RISKS
Secretary of State John Kerry, CIA Director Mike Pompeo: America's foreign policy priorities had become climate change, LGBTQ rights, and begging forgiveness for alleged transgressions. America's enemies were gaining on us; North Korea, with its improving nuclear arsenal, was just one problem. Avoiding risk is often more damaging than confronting it is. America must maintain a qualitative edge in its ability to collect intelligence, Pompeo writes. If you shy away from taking risks, you're giving up inch by inch, mission by mission, he writes.
In public service, I've taken inspiration from the risk-takers who have come before me. Risk-taking is a part of the American character, and we should never lose that advantage. Knowing you are on the hook for a bank loan is scary, but taking the entrepreneurial plunge comes with a multitude of rewards.
FROM CONGRESS TO THE CIA
Congressman Mike Rogers is the new chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. A spot opened up for one new Republican on the committee, and Representative Mike Rogers stepped in. Speaker John Boehner gets a bad rap sometimes, but there's no doubt about his love of country and home state of Ohio. On November 8, 2016, Rep. Mike Pompeo was reelected to his fourth term in Congress. On November 13, 2016, Rep. Mike Pompeo was asked to brief Vice President-Elect Mike Pence on national security topics for his debate against Tim
