The Congo's Kolwezi is the most indispensable city in the world. The cobalt found there provides stability and energy density to rechargeable batteries. Remove cobalt from the battery, and you will have to plug in your smartphone or electric vehicle more often - and before long, the batteries may catch on fire. The Copper Belt of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a metallogenic wonder that contains vast mineral riches, including about half the world's cobalt reserves. Kolwezi, like the rest of the Congolese Copper Belt, is scarred by the mad scramble to feed cobalt up the chain into the hands of consumers across the globe.

Cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) takes place at the bottom of complex supply chains that unfurl like a kraken into some of the richest and most powerful companies in the world.
