    About the Author

    Preface

This book, Scriptures for Love, is a follow-up to the first book in the Scriptures for series.

Scriptures for Life was written for people who, for one reason or another, do not read the Bible. It contains over 1,100 scriptures divided into thirty-eight categories. You, the reader, can easily see what the Bible has to say about any of the categories such as forgiveness, salvation, and love among others. It is not intended to replace regular Bible reading but to supplement and encourage it.

This volume, Scriptures for Love, goes much deeper into the subject of love. It examines the many concepts of biblical love. It presents over four hundred scriptures from the Bible to substantiate the theology of love. It answers some soul-searching questions such as, What does the Bible mean when it says that God is Love? What are the ramifications of that kind of love? When God says to love your neighbor as yourself, how do you do that? Further, how do you not only love your neighbor, but how do you love your enemy? How does God’s love for you manifest itself into your life? How do you return the love God has for you to him?

If you are not a Christian, this book is for you. It explains in a concise manner what Christianity is really all about. Read this book before you make a final decision to reject God.

If you are a new Christian, this book is for you. It will help you get started on your Christian walk and will show you how to get the guidance you need.

If you are a mature Christian, this book is for you. It will reaffirm to you the basic theology of Christianity.

    The Bible

As you begin your study of Scriptures for Love, it is very important that you understand that all the scriptures used in the study come from the Holy Bible. You probably know what the Bible is, but you may or may not know where it originated.

For readers who are not familiar with the characteristics of the Bible, some explanation may be warranted.

What is the Bible? In 2 Timothy 3:16–17, the Bible is described as God-breathed. It has also been called the inspired Word of God. It is the instruction manual, if you will, for the people of the earth. In it are all the rules that govern mankind. It is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. It contains instructions as to how you are to live your life on earth. God says that he has a plan for you and for your life. The Bible will explain how you can find what God has planned for you.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:16–17, NIV)

The Bible was compiled over period of years by men whom God appointed and equipped for the job. In 2 Peter 1:20–21, it is stated that the Bible is not a matter of any one man’s ideas. The men who were chosen by God to write the Bible were not writing their opinions or narrative.

God’s Word is not made up of the opinions of the writers or of the readers. The Word is given through the writers with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit so that you, the reader, can know the truth.

But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Pet. 1:20–21, NASB)

Authors of the Books of the Bible included Moses, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and others who wrote the Books of the Old Testament. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John contributed to the New Testament, in addition to Paul and Peter. All these men were inspired by God to write their Books.

All the Books of the Old Testament were believed to have been written by the year 435 BC. The New Testament was finished before the year AD 100.

You are advised in 2 Peter 1:19 that you will do well to pay close attention to what is contained in the Bible. The scriptures have been written for your edification and enlightenment. You are urged to keep God’s Word in your heart in Joshua 1:8 and to meditate on it day and night.

So we have seen and proved that what the prophets said came true. You will do well to pay close attention to everything they have written, for, like lights shining into dark corners, their words help us to understand many things that otherwise would be dark and difficult. But when you consider the wonderful truth of the prophets’ words, then the light will dawn in your souls and Christ the Morning Star will shine in your hearts. (2 Pet. 1:19, TLB)

In Revelation 22:18–19, you are warned not to add to or take away from the Bible. This verse was originally written to mean the prophecies contained in the Book of Revelation, but it is widely believed that it means any of God’s Word.

I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. (Rev. 22:18–19, NIV)

The biblical principle of inerrancy holds that the Bible is without error. What does that mean? That means that everything that is written in the Bible is the truth! God is not a liar. God does not make mistakes. He is God. He is supreme and sovereign, and he is the ruler overall. If the Bible says it is true, you can count on it being true.

All the scriptures you will read in this book are drawn from the Bible and are, therefore, true. What they are telling you is what God wants you to know. The following are just a few of the scriptures that refer to the Bible and help to explain what it is and its origin:

These things that were written in the Scriptures so long ago are to teach us patience and to encourage us, so that we will look forward expectantly to the time when God will conquer sin and death. (Rom. 15:4, TLB)

This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. (1 Cor. 2:13, NIV)

Blessed are those who hear the word of God, and observe it. (Luke 1:28, NASB)

Holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. (Titus 1:9, NASB)
