    Teachable Moments

In loving memory of the late Mother Lillian Lee Pete (mother), the late Yvette Carla Pete (only sister), and the late Pastor Aundre Fletcher (best friend). I miss you guys so much. Until we meet again. I’m working hard to make you proud.

    Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I would like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, from where all blessings flow. He has kept me these many years and allowed me to share my thoughts, theories, and revelations. And for that, I am forever grateful. You are the great I am.

And next, I would like to thank my wife, Lady Rehema K. Pete, of twenty-nine years at the time of this writing. Babe, I’m grateful for the many years of joy, encouragement, sacrifice, and patience. I would like to thank you for your endless pushing and support, in my life in general and in the writing of this book. You kept pushing me and believing in me despite my inner beliefs and frustrations. I am who I am because of your love and support. I thank you and love you.

And to the many people near and dear to me. I want to acknowledge my daughter, Seraya, and my son, Phillip Jr. Daddy loves you from the bottom of my heart. I want to also thank my mother-in-law, Peggy Knox, who lived with my wife and I for twelve years to assist us with raising our children, during the earliest times of their lives, even through college. We could not have done it without you. You were there for us. And I want to personally say thank you! I want to also thank Mother Lucy Nixon and Mother Irene Nixon for providing a safe family environment for me and all my siblings after the loss of our mother. The many get-togethers and Thanksgiving dinners brought us all through the most difficult time of our lives. You brought us together when no one else could and allowed us the space to heal, mature, and grow.

I want to thank my family. I give honor to my father, Lazarus E. Pete, and my stepmom, Gertie Pete. Dad, everyone tells me that I’m an exact replicate of you. Our birthdays are two days apart. I am my father’s son. And I want to let the record show that I love you and grateful for your many hours of teachings, training, strong biblical foundation and upbringing, tutelage, example, and rearing. Thanks, Dad.

And to my siblings, Alton E. Pete and Leon S. Pete, let me just say thank you to you both. I’m proud of you both. The world has not seen our best yet. Keep making us proud. I love and support you both. And to my brother-in-law, Moturi Bryant, sir, I say thank you.

To my good friend Pastor Raymond Kelly, God sent you into my life throughout the years, at the times we needed you the most. You are definitely a true prophet of God.

I want to honor and thank the New Bethel Churches in Richmond, California, for my spiritual foundation, upbringing, and teaching. And I would also like to thank the TPC church family in Vallejo, California, for my foundation in leadership, programming, and ministry. I am who I am because of you.

This thank you is for Bishop Marvin L Sapp and the late Malinda Sapp. We have known each other since 1997. I remember those years like yesterday. You both allowed us to experience a level of ministry beyond our wildest dreams. My wife and I salute you and the late Lady Malinda. You both took us under your wings and covered us when we needed to be covered. I miss her so much. I didn’t realize the level of her support until many years later. Thank you.

I would like to thank Bishop Marvin L. Winans and the Perfecting Fellowship International for the many years of extraordinary ministry, experience, and exposure. I speak continued blessings. I would also like to thank the pastors of PFI: Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Pastor Steve Middleton, Pastor Darryl Blair, Pastor Leo Carter, Pastor Terry Stover, Pastor Larry Trice, Pastor Timothy Finley, Bishop Randy Coggins, Pastor Spencer Ellis, Pastor Eric Tolbert, Pastor Tamara Bennett, Bishop H.F. Edwards (South Africa), and all the various other pastors.

This last thank you is for my cousin Jason L. Jones. We are closer than close and have been all our lives. You are like a best friend and cousin at the same time. I’m a month and a half older than you are, but people could never tell it. You have been there when I needed you the most. I rarely get the chance to tell you thank you. But I want to take this time to publicly tell you thank you. You had to step in and take the place of my best friend, Aundre Fletcher. And you have done a fine job. Again, I say thank you! The best is yet to come for us both.

    chapter 1

Where It All Began: Genesis 1

It all began with a command. When God decided to implement his plan on earth, he began with the command Let there be. The earth’s canvas was dark and empty, to the point of bleakness. And its hope was nonexistent. But in the mind of God, he saw its potential. So he
