This book came because I wanted to be a notary public. I met the lady in charge. She asked me to raise my right hand and swear to uphold the Constitution. My answer was, "I do not know what it says." Her answer was what caused me to study more and then do much intensive studying. She said, "That is okay. We don't know it either. This is the courthouse. That is okay. We do not need to know it."

But God, He made me go back to my Church office, find a copy of the United States Constitution, and study others. The Declaration of Independence, the Olivette Petition, and then our Constitution are documenting what men wrote, wanting a nation where men can serve God freely. "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable [that cannot be taken away or given away] rights."

I began learning that Matthew 22:15-22 and Romans 13 had so many different meanings from other preachers. It was confusing.

"That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends it is the right of the people to alter [we try that at our polls] or to abolish it." We the people have the right under God and government to abolish bad government. Exercise it.

You will learn the twenty-five reasons they gave for their freedom from tyranny. Today you will see that eleven of those reasons of separations are in our America today.

"To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understand shall attain unto wise counsels" (Prov. 1:2, 5).

    I wish to dedicate this book to my wife of over sixty years. I want to thank the Lord for her faithfulness to Him and standing with me through all that God has let us go through. She has been a great help to me, being the lady she is, and how she desires to help other ladies stand with their husbands regardless of what God puts in their life. Being a preacher’s wife is one of the toughest jobs any lady could have, and we need to be more grateful to them for their service to us their husbands. She has done a great job teaching both of our boys that God has given us and has been the mother to a lot of other kids.     There are very few books available that address the Constitution of the United States of America from the biblical viewpoint as The Bible and the Constitution does by Dr. Paul D. Davis. Bro. Davis not only brings the perspective of a gospel preacher, evangelist, and pastor but also one that has paid a personal price for his convictions on this subject.

    God’s design for government is seen in almost every sentence of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and original ten amendments known as the Bill of Rights. The checks and balances speak of men’s fallen nature. The three separate but equal branches of government speak of the Trinity. The twelve-man jury speaks of the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. The people overruling King Saul’s edict for the death penalty for his son Jonathon laid the foundation for jury nullification. No direct taxes was the result of our Lord’s words when he said, Then are the children free, concerning the fact that free men are not taxed. Originally, there was no income tax. Individuals were only taxed indirectly through their state government.

    One could only hope and pray that The Bible and the Constitution would become widely used as a textbook in high schools and pastor training schools in America.

    Noah Webster said, The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.

    At the Lincoln Memorial, we read his words: That this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

    And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, not speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. (Ezek. 3:16–18)

    And I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. (Ezek. 22:30)

    Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found thy works perfect before God. (Rev. 3:2)

    Study to Show Thyself Approved

    We titled this book because we want to recognize that in the United States of America, the 1611 King James Bible, the Word of God, is the supreme law of our lives and land.

    The Constitution is the supreme, what we call, common law of our land. According to the Word of God, our Constitution is the Caesar of our nation. This is why we ask the question, When was the last time anyone has read the Constitution? We should get more personal and ask, Have you ever read the Constitution?

    We feel that it is a Christian’s responsibility to read and know their national and state constitutions. Christ desires us to obey Him when he commanded us to know who Caesar is in our nation.

    And Jesus answering said unto them. Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s. And they marveled at him (Matt. 22:15–22; Mark 12:13–17).

    In the book of Matthew, it reads, after what He just said, When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left him, and went their way.

    We have many people who hear us teach the Bible and the Constitution but do nothing about what they hear; they just want to go their own way. We have had preachers say, I will do whatever the government says even if it is wrong or The lawyer said that we must obey the government in all they tell us to do or Well, the men thought it was best to incorporate our church or Our lawyer said the other business people will not recognize you as a church if you do not incorporate. And Jim Jones was incorporated by the state of California. We hear a lot of statements concerning God’s will for the modern-day church, and we believe the world thinks as they did when they talked with Jesus, this is what we see: "When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left him, and went their way" Matthew 22:22.

    How can we as Christians render unto a Caesar when we do not know who our Caesar is or when we do not know what our Caesar asks for? Is our Caesar a person as in the days of Jesus? Is our Caesar a group of people? Is our Caesar an office that a person holds? The answer to all these questions is no.

    The Word of God makes a lot of clear statements, but we always wonder how much of the Word of God is put into our everyday life. Do we really listen to the Word of God and do we put into context God messages that He gives us?

    One example would be 2 Timothy 2:15, Study. I cannot get past this first word. It is a great word and has a very strong meaning. The study does not mean read, and reading does not mean that you are studying. We must find out what a word means when we read the Bible. Many times one word could have three or four meanings, so we study to find out what the Word of God really says.

    We must study to shew thyself approved unto God.

    The reason to study is not lifting up ourselves or expected to be lifted up by others. We want to be approved unto God.

    In 2 Timothy 4:3–4, we read, For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine: but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    In this day and time, we have congregations that want a preacher who will not preach on their sin. It will be okay if you preach on other’s sins, but not mine. I had one deacon say to me once in North Carolina, "Preacher, you can preach on whiskey all you want, but if it was not for R. J. Reynolds, this church would not be here, so do not preach against tobacco in our church. My answer to him was, It is a shame the devil can build a building for a church but you will not let God build His church. That preacher invited me back after that week of meetings for the next year. Two months later, this deacon heard about it and told the preacher, You cannot have that man back again or we will fire you." The preacher called me and told me this so I could fill the same week with some other church. You better be careful of what you tell God and God’s man what will go on in His pulpit. Two months later, the church burned to the ground. God does not like to be told what to do.

    The worse part of this portion of Scripture is the teachers having itching ears.

    We have too many preachers now thinking they have a job where they pastor. The days of old-fashioned preachers getting on their knees and asking God, Where do You want me to pastor and help people find You and learn more about You? are about over.

    And the days of old-fashioned church members getting on their knees and asking God, Whom do You want us to have as a pastor to teach us Your Word and teach us how to win others to You? are about over also. We see too many pastors that say what one said to me just the other day. "I pastor a religious church and they do not want to learn the things of God. Also, this is a deacon-run church. I’m just here to retire."

    Preachers, turn your ears to God and let Him tickle your ears by saying, Well done thou good and faithful servant.

    When can we get back studying to be approved of God?
