    Controlling Your Thinking

    When I was starting out in my teaching career, I learned something that has influenced me on a daily basis. I must warn you that God will hold you responsible after you learn this principle. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. This will probably be one of my shortest chapters but one of the most profound.

    Many parents will teach their children the saying, Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Frankly, I have a huge problem with this saying. I was told that a doctor could attach electrode patches all over the head to read brain waves. The person being observed can say certain words and the activity of the brain can be measured. What was most intriguing was using a simple word such as try can be measured.

    Each year I would teach this principle to my students to set a foundation of classroom management. I required that the only words that came out of their mouths would be uplifting and positive. I would not allow a student to say that they would try their best. Trying wastes energy. I wanted my students to take responsibility for their actions. As a reminder before each quiz or test, I would ask the class, What does Mr. Mullins want from you? They would all say in unison, I am going to do my best. I would teach them to automatically say this when they got stumped on a hard question. God deserves our very best so we must strive with all our strength and resolve to give it to
