    Bible Steps - Chuck Wolfinbarger

    Day 1

    The Creation

    up—prayer

Father God, I want to thank You for making the universe and our world. Thank You for making me. I am amazed at how creative You really are. Will You help me to open my eyes to the wonder of Your creation? Help me to take care of the world You made. Help me to see how special I am to You. Thank You for having me in mind when you made the world. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

    in—word

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. […] Then God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. (Genesis 1:1, 26)

The creation account in Genesis is a divine record of what happened. God really made the world. He spoke it into existence from nothing. Impossible! You can’t start with nothing and end up with something. But God did because He is God. He made the vast universe with all the stars and solar systems. He made the earth and all the animals, fish, and birds. He made people on the earth, so He could have a relationship with them. He did this because of His great love. Adam and Eve mattered to God. He had a special relationship with them as they lived in the Garden of Eden.

Note—it says that you are made in the image and likeness of God. You are a responsible moral being who thinks, feels, chooses, and loves. You are very special. That means even though the universe is huge, you matter to God.

    out—challenge

Take time today, as you go about your busy schedule, to thank God for each thing that you see. It will only take a few seconds, but do it. Start to look at your world with eyes of appreciation and thanksgiving. Note the miracle of life. Don’t take for granted your life and your family and friends. They matter to God too.

    Day 2

The Fall of the Human Race

    up—prayer

Father, I know that I have sinned against You. I try to do good and end up messing up. I know that I was born a sinner. I want to thank You that You did not choose to leave me or any other human being. Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the cross to pay for my sins. I want to grow closer to You today. Thank You for reaching out to me and calling my name. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

    in—word

And the Lord God commanded the man, You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die. (Genesis 2:16–17)

Adam and Eve had only one choice for doing wrong (whereas look at how many choices we have now)—not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, yet they blew it. Satan came to them as a serpent and tempted them. He questioned what God had said and convinced them that it would be okay. He still uses the same old schemes. He is not very creative. However, we still fall for them. Adam and Eve sinned, and it messed up their relationship with God. They died spiritually that day and began to die physically. That was not God’s intention. He wanted them to live forever with Him. They messed up God’s intention. From then on, people come into this world with a nature to sin. We all have it. Thank God He had already anticipated this fall and had a plan for saving the human race. His first and only plan was Jesus.

    out—challenge

Try today to make good choices as you go through your day. Choose right at the beginning to pray and thank God for sending Jesus into the world to pay for your sins and the sins of the whole world. If you have an opportunity today, tell someone about God’s love and His wonderful plan for them.

    Day 3

    The Flood

    up—prayer

Father, thank You for the rainbow. It reminds me of the promise that You gave to Noah that You would not destroy the world again with a flood. I want to thank You for the many other promises that You have in the Bible. Help me to be reminded of these today as I live for You. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

    in—word

The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the Lord said, I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. (Genesis 6:5–8)

Evil was in the world because of Satan and man sinning. Adam had a son called Cain who killed his brother, Abel.

Some time had passed after Adam and Eve when things kept getting worse in the world. God was getting fed up with the people that He made. He decided to destroy the world that He made. He was going to do it with a worldwide flood. However, there was a man who found favor with God. His name was Noah. Noah was a man who apparently had trusted God and refused to live like everyone else. God warned him, so he built an ark which was a huge boxlike vessel. Noah took the animals that God told him to take, and he also took his wife and his three sons and their wives and got on. The Bible tells us that God shut the door. God promised to take care of Noah and his family. They trusted that God would do what He said. God did take care of them. All the nations of the world can be traced from Noah’s three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth. At the end, God sent a rainbow as a promise that He would not destroy the world by flood. God keeps His promises.

    out—challenge

Can you think of any other promise that God has said in the Bible? Write them down and thank God for them today. Also trust God to take care of you today.

    Day 4

Abraham the Father of the Faithful and Isaac

    up—prayer

Father, thank You for Abraham. He just trusted You for everything. Help me to learn to trust You for everything. Help me to believe that You will do what You say. I want to be faithful. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
