    CHAPTER 1

As you exit off of Interstate 90 and head north twenty-five miles to Tedford, Minnesota, you quickly feel as though you are in the middle of nowhere. The soybean and cornfields sprawl across miles, and as these crops grow, a green wall is put up on both sides of State Highway 17. The road looks like it is in need of repairs where discolored patches spring up in the pavement, showing the cut-and-paste jobs that are done on these roads. Small pockets of trees spring up, and a creek bed or two are visible while driving. In the winter, the wall of green gets replaced by a white blanket.

There is a permanent breeze that blows through Tedford. In the humid summertime, this can be your best friend, and in the winter, it is the very source of your tears, which run uncontrollably from your eyes when the temperature dips below twenty degrees; and the ever-present wind comes along to wreak havoc on your eyes, ears, nose, and throat. There really isn’t a season in Southern Minnesota when your life isn’t controlled by the weather.

It is a favorite saying of people who live in Minnesota, and plan their lives around the fickle climate. They love the season change and wouldn’t want to miss that if they moved elsewhere. I remember that date because I was unable to come home from college to a friend’s wedding. Spring is full of rainy days; summer is hot and sticky and is host to a convention of every type of bug God created. Autumn is nice, with the fall colors painting the tree-lined streets, but doesn’t last long; and the orange, yellow, and red hues are a warning of the uncomfortable weather that will arrive.

As you pull into town, you notice the Chevrolet dealership. It is owned locally and is neighbor to a John Deere Implement. Bright green-and-yellow tractors, as well as new Chevy pickup trucks, are prominently displayed. As you pull into town, you will notice a couple of gas stations, a Dairy Queen-style drive-in, and an autobody repair shop. The daughter of the man who owns the dealership constantly appears in local television commercials, hawking her dad’s business. She is older than me, but I always assumed she had been an aspiring actress, and this was a way to help her gain air time. The dealership also had a goofy commercial in the late ’70s, where there was patriotic music playing, and the slogan was "Buy
