Chapter 1

What Is a Dream and What Is a Vision?

He said, hear my word. If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known to him in a vision, and I will speak to him in a dream. (Numbers 12:6)

In this chapter, God dealt with Miriam and Aaron in the defense of Moses, basically telling them he would speak to prophets in dreams and in visions but not so with his servant Moses; face to face, God will speak with him clearly.

What is a dream? A dream is a series of images and sensations in a person’s mind during deep sleep. This stage of sleep is called REM Sleep. During this stage of sleep, an individual’s brain becomes more active and the body becomes more relaxed then dreams will occur. At this stage, the eyes will experience rapid eye movement. This is called REM Sleep.

The National Sleep Foundation suggests that most individuals spend about twenty-five percent of sleeping time in REM sleep. This phase of sleep happens about every ninety minutes and lasts longer later in the night. I believe this is the stage of the sleep cycle when God can communicate best through images, through impressions and dreams. Some dreams are symbolic, and some are literally plain sense. I will discuss the different types of dreams in a later chapter. REM sleep is where demonic spirits try to invade one’s mind and tries to depress, oppress, or possess an individual. These are called demonic dreams. Dreams are means of communication with God Almighty, and God in the scriptures used dreams to communicate his plans to his people. In Genesis 15:12–21, you will see that God communicated his will and plan to Abraham in a dream. It reads:

And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, a horror of great darkness fell upon him. And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
