Detention at the Hands of my Best Friend's Black Dad - Zoe Freud

DETENTION AT THE HANDS OF MY BEST FRIEND'S BLACK DAD

THE UNINVITED GUESTS had turned the villa into a battlefield of empty bottles, scattered food remains, and destroyed furniture. Drunken party guests I didn't even know padded happily around the pool among large pieces of garbage that had once been garden furniture. This was not what I had in mind when I set up the party for my 21st birthday on Facebook.

I had tried to throw out the rowdy guests, but they’d just laughed at me. Nalah, my best friend, kept running from one room to the next like a headless chicken, trying to save what could be saved. We had already called the police, but unfortunately they were a long time coming.

And now I was standing in the middle of our hallway, utterly helpless and on the brink of a full-fledged panic attack. Because this wasn’t my house or my parents’ house. No, this house belonged to Laurence, Nalah’s dad.

Nalah had talked him into allowing me to celebrate my birthday at their house, because there was simply so much more space than in my small two-room apartment. Not to mention the atmosphere in this villa: there was a large garden with exotic plants between the side wings of the villa. At night, that garden was illuminated in a very atmospheric and romantic way. There was also a large, heated pool and next to it was a bar where guests were served drinks and snacks. All in all, it was just the perfect location for a birthday party in summer! But all this had been turned into a battlefield within a few hours.

Some drunken guy who looked like the quarterback of a college football team staggered towards me, stupid drunk and holding the African bronze head sculpture that Laurence usually kept in a display cabinet in his library. He was waving it around, yelling drunken nonsense.

I felt the blood drain from my face when I realized what he was holding. Now I was in real trouble; that bronze head was an heirloom of Laurence’s, made sometime in the 13th century in North
