About this ebook

This is an 8,000-word short story that is set after the first Mercy Inn novella.

After leaving Mercy Inn, Sarah Rose launches a successful comeback tour, but trouble is brewing when Brad joins her after the baseball season. Megan, Sarah's manager, has taken it upon herself to find Brad's mother—the woman who abandoned him and his sister, never to be heard from again—and Brad isn't happy about it. After Sarah helps him realize that his anger is misplaced, he reaches out to his mother. When she doesn't respond, Brad feels the wounds of rejection all over again. When Megan gets involved again, the final night of the tour is one to remember.

Thank you and goodnight, Albuquerque. Sarah Rose’s band formed a line at the front of the stage and took a bow. Playing a sold-out show in front of a crowd so close to her Farmington home felt surreal. So much had changed since she had been stranded at Mercy Inn just eight months prior.

She went from self-imposed exile to returning to the big stage within a matter of months, singing songs she never thought she’d perform again. But yet, here she was. And, she had to admit, singing those old songs about Rick didn’t rip her heart out the way she expected. She attributed that to the healing work that had occurred at Mercy Inn.

Brad Hamilton’s minor league season had just come to a close, so this was his first opportunity to see her perform live, even though she’d been out on tour all summer. Secretly, she was glad his team hadn’t made the playoffs. She felt guilty about that, knowing it would look good for a first-year manager to take his team to the postseason, but she hadn’t seen him since the All-Star break in July.

Brad was there waiting for her when she stepped off the stage. So was Megan, her manager.

I was way up there for your 1993 show. Brad pointed up to the nosebleed seats in the back of the arena. And I can honestly say that you sound just as strong today as you did back then.

I wasn’t even born yet, so … I can’t be as nostalgic, but he’s right. You sounded great, as always. Megan Cahill spun around and wheeled herself toward
