Chapter One: The Lord Solicitor
There have been few times in my life I have feared so greatly for another man as I do now for my friend Jacques Rameau. The new French government in Paris intends to make an example of Jack for his missteps whilst a captain in the French army, and the example will quite likely result in the loss of his life. ‘Tis not fair the measures they have taken to convince him to return to his homeland after his taking of a wife in Ireland. However, fairness is not necessarily part of a gentleman’s understanding of honour. Especially as such an understanding relates to the new French government.
This way, sir.
I follow the butler through the large foyer of the estate home and then into a large dining room. A long table is set in the center of the large room and at one end a man is eating his breakfast of boiled eggs and sausages. There is a great silence surrounding us as the butler has me wait near the doorway whilst he speaks softly to the man. It is only when he nods his head toward me that I approach.
Good morning, Mr. Hutchins,
Lord Bellingham says as his butler leaves the dining room. Do have a seat, please.
He waves his hand toward a chair near where he is seated. As I sit down, he smiles at me and asks, Would you like something to eat, sir?
No, but thank you, my lord,
I reply as I fold my hands in my lap.
Lord Bellingham takes another bite of his food as I watch. There is nothing about our meeting with each other that appears to bother his appetite at all. It was the Lord Solicitor to Her Majesty the Queen of England who invited me to come this morning for a visit. According to his note, it would be far better this way so as to avoid the prying eyes of those who might see us at one of Southampton’s government buildings.
I understand you have a problem of some urgency,
he says to me after dabbing his mouth with a napkin from his lap.
Yes, my lord, I do,
I reply. My friend, Jacques Rameau, has been lured to France under the promise of a pardon, yet I received word from you that this pardon is simply a ruse.
Lord Bellingham sits back in his chair. Mr. Hutchins, your friend is an enemy of the French government. Whether that government had been still in the charge of Napoleon III or the Third Republic matters not. It was sheer fantasy on Mr. Rameau’s part to think he would receive such a pardon from those in Paris who are still seeking to bury what happened during the war. Your friend is an old piece of business they wish to conduct quickly and with finality.
I understand, my lord, but is there anything that can be done for him? He married whilst in Ireland and his wife will likely be imprisoned as well. Surely they do not have the requisite authority to detain an Irish citizen?
Lenora Rameau was married to Jack for only a few months before returning to France with him to visit his family. My old friend was certain the pardon was legitimate, as it was delivered by a special courier service that almost always deals in governmental affairs. He had no understanding that the French government wanted to make a spectacle of him instead. By now, Jack and Lenora will likely be imprisoned in Paris.
Both an Irish citizen and in greater part a subject of Her Majesty,
Lord Bellingham points out. This has caused Our Sovereign some distress.
Her Majesty knows of their plight?
I ask.
To an extent, of course. I have kept Her Majesty up to date on the happenings with the couple.
His eyes suddenly lock onto mine and I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention. However, Her Majesty knows not of Monsieur Rameau’s crimes.
It makes good sense for the Lord Solicitor to avoid explaining his part in Jack’s struggle to avoid capture at the hands of the French government. He was commissioned to seek all French deserters and return them to France to face trial and punishment. Instead, Lord Bellingham
