Favour Upon Favour - Morne Campher
Thanksgiving
I have to thank my heavenly Father. He gave me the idea for this devotional, He gave me the ability to write and He sent people with various skills and the know-how my way. He opened the doors for me. He made a way where there seemed to be no way.
I also want to thank my pastor, Wimpie Helmand. Whenever I had any theological questions, he was ready to answer them. He went through all of these books to make sure they were theologically accurate. Wimpie also contributed financially to the recordings of these devotionals. Furthermore, he also encouraged me to have this book published. Karen Loots organised for these devotionals to be broadcast on community radio stations and she also planned for these devotionals to be recorded.
What Is Mercy
Have mercy upon me, o God, according to Your Lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
Psalm 51: 1 (NKJV)
David had sinned against God. His sin had caused a rift in his close fellowship with God. He called on God to be merciful to him.
David addresses God in many of his psalms as my God.
However, here he uses the words o God.
It indicates that he knew God well enough to know that God is gracious, loving and merciful.
He saw his own sins in the light of God’s character and righteousness. He confesses that he he had rebelled against God. His sin was both an iniquity and an evil. It was only God’s abundant mercy that could erase his revolt; only God’s mercy could blot out his transgression – an old testament custom. Debts and crimes were written in a book. When those were forgiven, the inscriptions were blotted out; they were erased.
God’s mercy is often shown in the light of forgiveness and withholding punishment. Showing mercy does not exclude kindness. Being merciful means to be lenient and forbearing. It acts in a gentle way from a position of influence, authority and power. Mercy makes room for others.
––––––––
Mercy can be practically expressed in a kind way by not complaining to a manager when service was lacking. It can be shown through forgiveness and not making it difficult for someone to apologise. It can be acting in a gentle way way by correcting someone instead of being smug or vindictive. It can be compassionate by alleviating the sufferings of others.
God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to pay the price for mankind’s revolt against Him. Because of His death and resurrection, all men who believe in Jesus are eternally saved. Through our faith in Him we do not get what we deserve. That is mercy.
During World War II, an American pilot, Charles Brown, thought he had flown his first and last mission. His co-pilot, Spencer ‘Pinky’ Luke, also had doomsday thoughts. They were in the sights of a German Messerschmitt fighter plane. Their B-17 bomber was crippled and alone over the skies of Germany. Half of the crew were wounded and the tail-gunner was dead. However, the German pilot nodded at them, didn’t pull the trigger and let them go. He chose to be merciful to them.
Thank you, Father, for being merciful to me. Thank you for not giving me what I deserve. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
Compassion In Action
because of the merciful compassion of our God by which the Dawn will visit to help us from on high,
Luke 1: 78 (LEB)
Old Testament prophets prophesied of a herald that would come to announce the coming of the Messiah. Zechariah, John The Baptist’s father, was celebrating the fulfillment of those prophesies.
For centuries, the voice of prophets had not been heard in Israel. Now the day had come when the long-awaited Messiah would come, promising the kingdom of God and salvation. John The Baptist was to preach repentance and baptism, preparing the ground for the work that Jesus was to do – offering salvation to all people who believes in Him. Jesus is the Dawn Who came to visit us from on high. John The Baptist was not the Dawn, but he drew attention to Jesus.
Through God’s grace, mercy and compassion, the Light of salvation came to pierce the darkness of this fallen world. The world has been living in spiritual darkness, living in the shadow of death. Only through Jesus can the reviving light of the knowledge of the glory of God be seen. Jesus,
