JOHN AMES (JOHN 1) was born 1540 in Bruton, Somersetshire, England. Legend is that his father’s name was also John Ames. However, the John Ames of which there is indirect evidence of was born in 1540, and died at the age of 43 in the year 1583 in Bruton, Somerset Shire, England. John Ames was born during the 31st year of the reign of King Henry VIII of England. This English King was a very significant figure in English history. It was he who separated from the Roman Catholic Church since the Church would not grant his divorce from his first wife, and ultimately excommunicated him. In defiance to the Catholic’s, he established the Church of England, or the Episcopal Church, and went on to marry and divorce six wives. Two of the six wives ended up beheaded for various reasons, which can
