      The studded oak doors to the throne room burst open. My breath caught upon the sight of two armed guards storming in, dragging a woman between them. The gothic-style windows that spanned the perimeter of the room allowed golden light to splash in. The sun’s brilliant rays bounced off of the guards’ metal breastplates, distorting my view. But I knew exactly why they were here—and who they were bringing to me.

      With the woman in tow, they marched forward, the tips of her feet dragging across the scarlet carpet runner. She kicked and thrashed violently, trying to fight them off of her.
