Chapter 1
Generation No. 1
The earliest record of the Scheele family, which connects with this author’s bloodline, is the Scheele family from the Hanover, Germany region. As seen in this old map below the Hanover area is nearly due south of Hamburg.
It was during medieval times that Hanover was founded on the south bank of the Leine River. At that time in history the area started to grow in population with fisherman and ferrymen. The location was at a natural crossroads for merchants transporting their goods east to west, and over the mountains to the south. The overland roads used by the many mule trains transporting their merchandise were rough throughout that region, and by way of Hanover a gateway was born for transportation routes using the waterways. As seen below, the waterway from Hanover proved to be a vital route for transportation to the city of Bremen, and it also connected merchants to the waterways of the Rhine, Ruhr, and Saar River valleys. When industrialization began in Germany, especially from the trade in iron and silver from the northern Harz Mountains, the city of Hanover became very important as a transportation center moving cargo throughout the region and beyond.
