Striebich Family History and Genealogy - Douglas M. Dubrish
Anthony Striebich
Anthony Striebich was born in the town of Baden in the German State of Baden on April 19, 1836. In 1843, at the age of 7, he came to America with his family. What compelled the family to leave their homeland and come to the United States will always remain a mystery unless documentation is found in the form of a journal or memoirs kept by a family member. We can only speculate at what the motivation could have been. To do this we must look at the history of Baden during this period of time.
Baden-Baden is located in Southwest Germany not far from the French boarder. Its location is at the foothills of the Black Forest in the Oos Valley. Weather wise it has a mild climate with an early spring, prolonged autumn, and limited snow fall. Baden has been well known as a health resort, and vacation town, for hundreds of years.
In 1830 Grand Duke Leopold succeeded his half-brother Grand Duke Louis. Leopold ruled during the period 1830 to 1852, which is at the time that the Striebich family immigrated to the United States. In 1830 elections took place which resulted in the return of a Liberal majority in Baden, and with the years to come many Liberal reforms in the constitution, in criminal and civil law, and in education occurred. By 1839 talk around the country began to become radical with meetings and demonstrations taking place. Eventually, this led to the revolutionary year of 1848 where a progressive income tax was sought along with adjustments to labor interests. The Striebich family departed Baden 5 years before the revolution.
