    Dear xcc,

    Friday,21 January 2022 (2230 Hrs, TX)

Currently I’m doing – I’ll call it fair, thanks for asking. As always, it has indeed been a lengthy amount of time since I’ve had what I would call a heart-felt letter from you. It’s possible it has been longer than you realise and I will be glad when university no longer has you stressed out.

Thank you also for the warm New Year wishes. Christmas and New Year’s Day here were spent in the midst of a full blown, non-Covid lock-

down, that lasted 43 days. Day 1 was on the 6th December, Day 43 on the

17th January. 18th January was the return to normal, for prison life. So, 2022 did not start well for me and I now have low enthusiasm for this year.

Thank you for inviting me to do this project as well. I’ve been eagerly looking forward to it since you first mentioned it back in October 2021. It gives us something to look forward to, definitely gives me something more to do and it may prove educational, for not only us, but others as well.

Somewhere in your collection of letters from across the years is, I’m sure, the intro letter that I sent to you. If you happen to find it, we’ll then know exactly how long we’ve been corresponding. I’m leaning to- wards 8 years. I just reached the 9-year mark of being imprisoned and I hadn’t been away all that long when we first connected. Due to such lim- ited storage space here, your first letter was long since bundled into ex- cess property and picked up when someone from my family visited. Who knows where it is stored now.

We are definitely a couple of mis-fits who have been through some horrors together across the miles and the years. I have to agree with you that we are a friendship of irony. Sometimes I am still in amazement that a short, fiery young Muslim woman has managed to help me and show me more compassion, understanding and friendship than many proclaimed Christians. Is it any wonder so many people are falling away from Christianity? There is a heavy disconnect between what a Christian

    1

claims and what a Christian does. As a Christian myself I find it exasper- ating.

Along our journey you’ve learned more about me than what I have shared with anyone – ever. Beyond what any of my former friends had knowledge of (former because coming to prison lost me all of them – you really do find out who your friends are) and beyond anything I’ve ever divulged to anyone in my family. Only Almighty God
