Amanda stared at her shoes, even though she knew it was not what you are supposed to do during a job interview. She told herself her manners were not as important as her credentials, and she hoped she would be working at a company that accepted her for who she was.

Staring at her shoes was Amanda’s way of communicating exactly that. She wanted the man sitting in front of her to understand who he was dealing with. And it seemed he had.

I understand that you are a bit shy. But this job involves talking to people. His deep voice reached her and she forced herself to raise her head. Upon meeting his eyes, she felt a shudder inside her.

She hoped her voice wouldn’t crack when she spoke.

Yes, sir. It hadn’t. But I was under the impression that this position required me to follow orders and improvise when I need to. I was told I would not be doing presentations or attending company events.

That is true. He smirked as if he had a secret she was not aware of. And I also heard that you have applied to many jobs and was refused. Is that true?

How would he know that? Amanda’s eyes wandered back to her feet.

Yes, that’s true. She said softly.

And you really need a job. He said matter of factly.

Her heart was pounding now. How did he know about all this?

Amanda lifted her again to meet his eyes as she responded.

Yes, sir. My father is very ill and I need a job to pay for his hospital bills. She sounded quiet but not embarrassed about her situation. Nothing wrong with having to work.

Then I guess we might be able to work this out. He stretched in his seat and stared at
