As I was putting my husband’s clothes in the dryer downstairs, someone knocked at the front door.

It’s probably him, my son called from the top floor, followed by the booming sounds of his feet hitting the stairs as he crashed his way down. He had to be the loudest boy in all the world, I swear. I stood, straightened the kinks out of my back, and made my way up to the main level, puffing strands of my unruly blonde hair from my eyes. As I stepped through the basement door, I turned to find a very tall young man, tattoos along one side of his neck and down the lean muscles of his left arm. His big, bright brown eyes fixed on me and a smile slowly crept across his full lips.

Mrs. J, he said in a voice deeper than I remember from three years ago when I last saw him at his and Josh’s high school graduation. Hey. Thanks for putting me up.
