Aven Green Soccer Machine - Dusti Bowling
Kids play a lot of different sports in elementary school: baseball, softball, basketball, dodgeball, Simon Says, and Butts Up. But the best of all sports is the one I like to play, and that sport is called soccer!
I’m already the best soccer player I know, even though I only just started last year in second grade. And I don’t play soccer like everyone else. Actually, wait a minute. Yes, I do! Everyone has to use their feet to play soccer, and so do I. Because you see, I don’t have arms. Yep, you heard me. No arms here on my torso, which I’d like to add is already eight years old.
That means when I kick the soccer ball, I use my feet. And when I do a knee trap, I use my knee. And when I chest the soccer ball, I use my chest. And when I headbutt the soccer ball, I use my butt. Just joking. I use my head, of course. I only use my butt during some of my best soccer moves, like my top secret booty trap. And everyone knows about the toot decoy.
Dad was the one who got me really interested in soccer. One day he brought home a soccer ball from the store, and we just started kicking it around the yard. Then he built a soccer goal out of some plumbing pipes and a fishnet. Every time I kicked the ball into the homemade goal, it would fall to pieces, which was so much fun, even if Dad didn’t think so. Then Dad bought a real soccer goal that didn’t fall to pieces.
Dad said soccer and I were made for each other, and he’s totally right! Soccer is probably my second most favorite thing to do, right after eating gummy bears and mint chocolate chip ice cream. Dad was my coach last year, and this year he’s going to be my coach again. And guess what? Emily and Kayla are on my team too. They’re pretty good at soccer, but they’re not as good as I am. Because they don’t know how to do the top secret booty trap.
My friends and I practiced our best soccer moves outside at recess. I can’t wait for soccer to start!
I shouted as I kicked the ball to Kayla.
This is going to be the best season ever!
Kayla cried as she headbutted the ball to Emily.
The ball bounced off Emily’s unibrow, and she kneed it back to me. We’re going to kick everyone else’s butts,
she said, rubbing her forehead.
Sujata stood nearby, watching us quietly and looking a little left out. You want to play, too, Sujata?
I asked her.
Her face lit up, and she ran over. Those aren’t very good soccer shoes,
I told her, pointing down at her beautiful gold sandals.
