Chapter 1: Introduction
Defining Empathy and Narcissism
Empathy and narcissism are two concepts which are often discussed together, yet can have vastly different meanings. Empathy is defined as the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, and to recognize and identify with their emotions and feelings. Narcissism is defined as an excessive need for admiration, an inflated sense of self-importance, and a disregard for the feelings and needs of others. The two concepts are often discussed together because they are often seen as opposing qualities – while empathy is an understanding and respect for other people’s feelings and perspectives, narcissism is a focus on one’s own feelings and perspectives.
Empathy is often seen as an essential quality for any successful relationship, as it allows for an understanding and recognition of the other person’s feelings and needs. Empathy is not only important for interpersonal relationships, but is also seen as an important tool for understanding the needs of a diverse population. Empathy allows for a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of people who are different than oneself. This understanding can lead to open communication, improved relationships, and better problem-solving.
Narcissism, on the other hand, is seen as a negative quality. Narcissists tend to lack empathy and have an inability to recognize the feelings and needs of others. A narcissist’s focus is on their own needs and desires, and they often have a disregard for the feelings and needs of others. Narcissists tend to be highly self-centered, and often lack the ability to
