Prologue
Michigan, 1920
EXHAUSTED FROM A HARD day’s work, Edward Griffin wiped his sweat-ridden brow with the dirty sleeve of his shirt. Ushering his horses back to their stables, he surveyed his dying farmland with a heavy heart. He was getting older and the demands of the farm were becoming too much for him. One person could only do so much. Times were changing, and the new farming equipment he desperately needed came with a heavy price tag. He and his wife had four children, with a fifth on the way. It made him sick to think about what kind of future they might have if he couldn’t figure out a way to turn things around.
Heading back to his modest farmhouse, he spotted his youngest child, Anna, playing on the front porch. Her mass of fiery curls fit her equally wild personality. At only four, she already exhibited some of his family’s traits. Traits he hoped to never reveal to his wife. She was an amazing and loving woman, but he wasn’t sure she would understand. Edward wished his magic could revive the farm, but sadly, his gifts didn’t include the power to manipulate nature. Instead, he and Anna had both been blessed with the power of telepathy. She was the only one of his children with magical abilities, and it made him feel more connected to her.
Years earlier, Edward had been drawn to this land. The earth itself seemed to give him a power boost. Now, it felt like the land had given up. He barely grew enough crops to sustain their daily food supply, let alone make money. At his wits end, Edward decided it was time to take matters into his own hands, and with his family fast asleep, he snuck out to the barn. Casting a circle in the middle of the hay, he sliced his hand with a knife, offering his blood to whoever might be listening. With tears in his eyes, he begged for a way to save his farm. When nothing happened, Edward dropped to his knees and wallowed in what felt like another failure.
Three days later, while Edward’s wife and children were busy tending to the animals, there was a harsh knock at the door. He opened the door to find a strange woman standing on the other side. She had a beautiful face, but her body was cloaked in a long, flowing black robe; that seemed to be hiding a large deformity on her back. Unsettled by her presence, Edward demanded to know why she was at his home.
I am here because you summoned me,
she purred
