This story takes place in the 1980’s in Sarasota, Florida. Sarasota was a sleepy little town which was soon to turn into a growing city. Life at that time was a lot less full of the technology we use today. Most people were learning about the computer world and were communicating through email. Cell phones existed, but they were not yet being used by the average person. When a ten-year-old girl is forced to leave her home in a small town in Illinois, a new friend and a kindly old gentleman who loves to paint make her realize she has a lot to learn about the joys and hazard of Florida living and human nature. Things are not always as they seem...
Casey had a knot in her stomach. She wasn’t sure if she was nervous, hungry, or just tired. Her family’s minivan pulled into The Blue Heron condo parking lot, and she stepped out of the van. Her leg muscles felt cramped after the long car ride, and she tried to stretch them out.

Casey looked toward the voice and saw a gray-haired man with eyes to match smiling down at them. He was carrying an easel, paint set, and a canvas.
You must be the new managers’ kids. I’m Mr. Kearns, and I’ve been helping out around here until your parents arrived. Welcome to Florida!
Casey’s parents stepped out from behind the silver van. Her dad shut the trunk, set his leather brief case down, and reached out to shake Mr. Kearns’s hand.
Nice to meet you, Mr. Kearns. I’m Michael Simms, and this is my wife, Kerry. I see you’ve already met Casey and Cory. They are not as excited about this new venture as my wife and I are.
Is that right?
said Mr. Kearns smiling at the two children.
It’s a vacation spot not a home,
Casey tossed her
