Come here, Annie, your scarf’s wonky.

I step forward obediently and let Michelle, senior stewardess and my supervisor, fiddle with the scarlet silk scarf around my neck.

That’s better, she says, stepping back and smiling as she looks me over. Don’t make me regret putting you forward for first class duties.

I gasp. Did you really? I only qualified as a flight attendant a few months ago. Getting to serve first class passengers is a huge honour. I guess my attention to detail and work ethic paid off.

You only got picked because you’re pretty, says Bette, another stewardess I’ve had the misfortune of flying with in the past.

The beam slips off my face. Michelle rolls her eyes. Don’t listen to her. She’s just salty she didn’t get picked this time.

I bite my lip. Maybe someone more experienced should take my place…

Bette snorts. Our VIP passengers don’t want experience. They’re looking for fresh meat.
