Being an au pair is my dream job – and this morning I’m scared I’m going to lose it.

I couldn’t believe my luck when the agency found me a placement in the south of France. My hosts-slash-employers, Yvette and Pierre Lambert, are both busy working professionals, so I spend a lot of time on my own in their beautiful house in Saint-Tropez. Sure, I have to do the cooking and cleaning, but I also get free time to explore the town and soak up the culture – not to mention the sunshine.

But even though it feels a bit like a holiday, I work hard. This is my first year as an au pair and I’m determined to do a good job despite my inexperience.

The Lamberts have been kind to me. Pierre in particular is very attentive, suggesting new places for me to visit, or recommending coffee shops with delicious pastries. He often brings me little treats – last week he left a pink box of raspberry macarons on my bed – and tells me when I’ve done a good job, squeezing my shoulder and standing so close I can smell the spicy cologne he wears.

I like knowing I’ve pleased him, that he doesn’t regret hiring me.

If I’m honest, I think I might have a tiny crush on him. He’s incredibly handsome, tall and dark-haired, faint lines around his eyes that crease up when he smiles. And his voice…
