HOKUSAI was born in 1760 and was brought up in a poor district of Edo (now renamed Tokyo). He was a prolific painter, print designer and book illustrator and was one of the most renowned masters of the Japanese colour print (UKIYO-E) - a school of art that concentrated on picturing, through the medium of a woodcut, the pleasures of ordinary things in everyday life.
Hokusai’s life span as an artist was more than seventy years, during which time, with great versatility, he depicted every possible subject. He apprenticed himself to many printmakers and orthodox artists, often quarrelling and falling out with them on his way in pursuit of his
