    HOKUSAI was born in 1760 and was brought up in a poor district of Edo (now renamed Tokyo). He was a prolific painter, print designer and book illustrator and was one of the most renowned masters of the Japanese colour print (UKIYO-E) - a school of art that concentrated on picturing, through the medium of a woodcut, the pleasures of ordinary things in everyday life.
