About this ebook

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a writer in possession of some time and an idea needs nothing more urgently than motivation. Now, if you'll forgive me for adapting this Jane Austen quote to the circumstances, let me explain my thought:
You can have both a breakthrough idea and all the time in the world - only it's of little use if motivation is lacking. If that's there, too, however, questions might arise that can be a bit overwhelming, especially for new writers.
This guide is intended to shed the necessary light on the subject, so that even you, as a non-specialist author, can understand what it means to write and publish a book. It must be said that a manuscript can be finished without even thinking about publication. Sounds strange, doesn't it?

What you can expect in this book

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a writer in possession of some time and an idea needs nothing more urgently than motivation. Now, if you will forgive me for adapting this Jane Austen quote to the circumstances, let me explain my thought:

You can have both a groundbreaking idea and all the time in the world - only this is of little use if there is a lack of motivation. If this is also present, however, questions might arise that can be a bit overwhelming, especially for new authors.

This guide is intended to shed the necessary light so that even you, as a non-specialist author, understand what it means to write and publish a book. It must be said that a manuscript can also be finished without even thinking about publication. Sounds strange, doesn't it?

But that's what can take a lot of pressure off the whole thing. After all, writing is first and foremost about your idea; about putting your idea on paper and seeing where it leads. Whether you want to share that idea with the world, that step is ultimately up to you.

Don't get me wrong - there's always a need for new stories and diversity, even in the book market, but with this guide, I hope to give you a fresh perspective on the big, wide publishing world. One that encourages you to write your story knowing that it just needs to be written first.

Suppose you gather all your courage and decide to take the plunge and contact a publisher. The motivation thing looks very different right away when you understand what's happening: What happens to the manuscript after you send it in? Does the publisher need the whole manuscript or just part of it? And then, which one? Do you get it back afterwards or not?

And once you've found a publisher whose program your story fits into, what comes next? What steps does it go through until your creation has a cover and is on the shelves of the bookstore of your choice? What other forms of publication are there besides the classic route?

What role do you play as an author and
