Introduction

The passing of Mikhail Gorbachev, a voice of rationality in the chaos amidst the Cold War era, signifies the end of a chapter in the history of the twentieth century. Large-scale shifts occurred in Russian politics, as well as Russian society, international relations, and the global ideological struggle
during Gorbachev's reign as Soviet leader from 1985-1991.
Gorbachev is known for many things. He cautioned people about nuclear weapons, the deteriorating state of the environment, and the necessity to keep socialism alive in a capitalist, globalizing society.
He was born to a poor family in the southern Russian town of Privolnoye in 1931. According to an article in The New Yorker entitled Mikhail Gorbachev’s Enduring Example,
while Gorbachev was "an infant, famine killed nearly half the inhabitants [of Privolnoye], including two of his uncles
