Sir Michael Hendricks - Sir Michael Hendricks

    Chapter 1

Even in her addiction and addict mind state my momma knew that business flowed through her veins. At birth she named me Sir Michael Hendricks. From my knowledge we use the term Sir before an individual’s name for respect! So from the womb I commanded respect. I would demand to be respected at all cost. (Hey I’m a boss.) My mom was a full-fledged crack addict and my father was a pimp and not having him in my life only made me go harder...

Momma. I opened the door to a dark half-empty house. Although the day outside was bright and sunny, the house inside made it look like it was midnight. All the windows was either covered with blankets or caked with dirt and dust.

Momma, I called again loudly. I was afraid to walk down to her room, afraid of what I may have to witness, knowing she could be "entertaining one of her friends or smoking that stuff that made my nose feel like acrid sand had been tossed inside of it. I looked towards the kitchen. Big mistake! As soon as I did I almost jumped out of my skinny skin. My stomach growled so loudly if anybody was behind me they would have sworn I either had an angry black bear inside of me or I was making jungle sounds with my mouth. I hadn’t eaten in 2 days, sacrificing my own portion of the meager meal I scraped together for my siblings. Something had to give. I’m Sir Michael." I shouldn’t be starving. Even in my young mind I knew I deserved better.

When I got closed to my mom’s room, I heard the familiar noises that still turned my empty stomach. I heard my momma’s fake passionate cries of ecstasy. I sped my steps up and went to my room. If I had a door to my room I would’ve slammed it. Since not, I tried to close my mind and thoughts to what I knew was going on only a few steps down the hallway. Dirty clothes was thrown everywhere. The mattress my brothers and I shared was still unmade with the sheet and blanket rumpled up. I looked around the room for a shirt and pants that was less dirty than the pair I now wore. Earlier at school, I got into a fight with a dude that thought he was the next million-dollar stand-up comic! He made a jab at my mom saying he had seen her in a vacant field doing her best shit. Even though I wasn’t proud of my mom and the things she did for drugs, I still loved her and wouldn’t allow nobody to disrespect her. Changing into less dirty clothes, I walked back outside to the bright sunshine. Behind me I heard the door opening. Turning I saw Odis, the neighborhood’s shade tree mechanic wearing an oily black shirt and dingy dickie pants. Seeing me he smiled. Hey boy, you growing up ain’t ya? he asked. Sensing my displeasure and anger, his smile faltered. Got you a girl yet, boy? he attempted small talk. Seeing that I didn’t wish to be friendly, he limped past me, pulling his grimy pants up on his narrow bony hips. He said nothing else as he got inside his car and drove off.

I watched him leave, hating him and thinking about my own absent father, who I knew but never communicated with, or who never communicated with me. He was a pimp who everybody called Chico. He lived in 5th Ward and had a small stable of whores who worked for him. I thought about the money he was making and spending. I thought about how me and my brother were practically starving. I looked up at the sky again. The sun was shining beautifully. I looked right at the naked sun. It was God’s eye and it was looking directly at me! It was shining on me. You want to shine, son? I heard that voice. You gotta grind! It seems like right then a certain passion hit me. A drive that I couldn’t describe, I felt it, in all its intensity. I looked around at my hood. I seen no one. But right then I vowed to myself, I’m gone be a boss!!

    Chapter 2

Crickett and BayBay was drug kingpins. They were brothers. They name rung like the bells at the stock exchange when big money stocks was increasing!! The whole Houston knew them and their street fame. I was just beginning the age of 10, but I felt like I was 20. I was on my grown man when I supposed to be enjoying the excitement of my youth. Was I mad? Naw!

Say Poke, where Crickett ‘nem want me at? I asked, sitting on the porch outside my patna’s house. I was anxious to get at some money! It was already understood that I would begin to work for Crickett and his brother BayBay. I was anxious to get on my J.O.B.!! The sooner I start the BI, the sooner I can jump, fly, and come down major! I had all types of head dreams, strategies and schemes that would one day switch my status from worker to boss!

Calm down lil nigga! He gone put you on ya spot in a minute!! Poke answered. He chuckled with amusement at my impatience. I didn’t see a damn thing amusing. The lights and water was off at my house. My momma hadn’t been home in two days. My brothers was depending on me. They were hungry for food substances and I was hungry for the life the Gods intended and planned for me to have.

I can tell already you gone eat greedy! Poke stated, seeing the passion that burned in my eyes and feeling
