"You made your bed,
now you can lie in it"
A horrendous noise suddenly interrupted Kelly’s blissful sleep. In a moment of chaotic confusion, her foghorn alarm clock catapulted her into the real world. Ugh, it was 4:00 a.m. and time to jump back onto the hamster wheel of life. She started the usual morning routine by embracing full consciousness, adorning herself with the so flattering scrubs that she had worn for years, grabbing a bagel and a strong cup of coffee, and bolting out the door. Another possible twelve-hour day loomed ahead of her. Actually, it would be a twelve-hour day only if she was lucky. Every day was a new adventure. No two were the same.
Kelly had been an obstetric/pediatric nurse for many, many years. At times, she felt as if she had seen it all. Even though young children’s issues tended to be more respiratory in nature, there were other issues that could be much more complicated. In times like those, age, gender, education, culture, socioeconomics, religion, and systemic factors came together to create the perfect storm. Add to this misogyny, chauvinism, hate, and racism, and you had a tsunami of a problem. The result was and is a collection of damaged and traumatized individuals. Sometimes the ground was or is littered with the corpses of women and children in particular. The victims were and are often treated as collateral damage as a result of life and living.
After punching in, Kelly proceeded to her work station. Getting report was always the first order of business. The patient assignments were made for the shift. For Kelly, today would prove to be a major challenge of her skills both professionally and personally. She had been assigned a ten-year-old child who had become pregnant as a result of
