Automatic writing is a rather special writing process, born in the 20XXth century. The goal is to succeed in completely emptying one's head of all consciousness and all will, and putting down on paper everything which comes to your mind, without trying to obtain the slightest logical order. It goes without saying that it's very difficult to manage to enter this state of quasi-spiritual trance. It is an integral part of the surrealist movement, a rather recent artistic movement since, as said a little above, it dates from the XXth century. Many authors such as Robert Desnos or André Breton, who is its founder, have given it a try. The latter has notably authored the Manifesto of Surrealism
in 1924, his first essay, manifesto in which he gives a rather clear and concise definition of automatic writing, as follows:
« Have something to write brought to you, after having settled yourself in a place as favorable as possible to the concentration of your mind on itself. Put yourself in the most passive, or receptive, state you can. Disregard your genius, your talents and those of everyone else. Tell yourself that literature is one of the saddest paths which lead to everything. Write fast without a preconceived subject, fast enough not to hold yourself back and not be tempted to read yourself again. The first sentence will come by itself, as it is true that every second there is a sentence, foreign to our conscious thought, which is only asking to
