    Introduction

I first had the idea for East End Eats at home in spring of 2017. I had lost my wallet on the previous bank holiday Monday and had to cancel my trip to Australia because I had no credit cards, driver’s licence, or way of paying for anything during my trip. I stayed at home in London for days looking out the window wondering; could I holiday in my very own suburb?

The idea for East End Eats was never about beginning at the high end. It was about making a book that would suit both a Londoner and a visitor. In the ten years that I have lived in London, Shoreditch and the East End has seen massive regeneration, transforming from a no-go area with high crime rates, to a place populated by creative types and artists. It’s now one of the most desirable places to live in London, if not the world.

The East End has gone from strength to strength and despite the duality between the original inhabitants, to the mix of city bankers who work just down the street, there is an unusual harmony in the area and that is something quite unique to London.

The people in the area at the weekend differ to those who are here midweek. Weekend markets like Brick Lane, Columbia Road and Broadway Market are full of both visitors and Londoners; however take a walk along Regent’s Canal on a Tuesday afternoon and you will see locals walking their dogs, cycling and generally doing outdoors exercise.

In this digital age, we all rely on our phones to hunt for the coolest places to go, but sometimes we just need to sit down and relax with a book that is both beautiful and evocative – there’s nothing that can be compared to the tactile
