All I Want for Christmas is a Fake Boyfriend - Raquel Anne

Prologue - The Way I Am

Finishing my last exam for my bachelor’s degree sent a feeling of pure unadulterated pride through my veins. My mother would have preferred I stayed home and found an eligible bachelor to win me over rather than seek a degree. One word, two very different meanings. The one my mother valued and the one I valued. In her mind, a Culinary Arts Bachelor of Science degree could at least open doors for me to meet rich men. At least that’s what she convinced herself in order to allow me to pursue my passion.

Graduation day was exciting, filled with hugs and applause, but the moment my family had me alone it was all business.

Now that you’ve finished this ridiculous tantrum, I expect you and Randy to announce your engagement, my mother smiles as she declares her will.

Randy and I had begun dating when I started college. He was more a convenience than anything else. We never really had true feelings for one another, but I never expected his betrayal.

    Um...about that...

My mother’s eyes narrow as she glares at me, knowing she isn’t going to like what comes next. Rae Elizabeth Coleman, if you tell me that you messed things up with that young man, I swear to all that is holy!

Her words trail off, but I can feel her anger and disappointment coming off of her in waves.

My own irritation rises up to meet hers. He cheated on me, Mother! I caught him in bed with -

You need to apologize and promise to be a better spouse! Whatever it is, you two can work it out. Swallow your damn pride and work things out, her words make me sick, but I can’t help but crave her approval.

With a man, Mother. I caught him in bed with a man. It’s not a matter of doing something wrong or finding a way to work things out. The only way I could fix things with him is if I had a sex change to become a man.

Her shock takes me off guard and I can’t help but feel a little spark of victory. That is until she opens her mouth again. Straightening her spine, she sighs. No matter. You can find a man with a better status. I expect you’ll do just that in the following months.

Ok, Brother, we’re alone. Tell me what happened this time, I take a sip of my coffee, waiting for my brother to explain.

I own a resort and he knows there is an open door policy where he is concerned, but I do expect an explanation when he wakes me up at four in the morning, three sheets to the wind. His celebrity status has him out at parties, fundraisers, and personal appearances on a regular basis, but they normally end with him passing out in a hotel or his penthouse, not wasted on my doorstep.

When he doesn’t respond right away, I pass him my cup of coffee and go make a fresh cup for myself. By the time I return, Alaric’s leg is no longer bouncing with nerves. He holds the cup between both of his hands, slowly rotating it as he studies the content.

There was this girl... he starts.

Rolling my eyes, I can’t help but respond, Isn’t it always a girl?

This one is different. She’s crazy, and by crazy, I mean certifiable.

What did you do to her? I can’t help but assume he did something. He’s not big on
