About this ebook

Georgie has grown up with talking newspapers posted in the trees and scanning his fingerprint to open his front door. So when his mom, Sara, hands him his grief-support toy, he knows just what to do with his new hologram Grams. Play!

Georgie and Grams laugh together. They bake together. They put eggshells in the brownie batter together. (Some things never change.) But what happens when her battery dies and Georgie has to say one last goodbye?

Georgies Long Goodbye is about the eternal bond of love that carries us far beyond the reach of this lifetime.

This is dedicated to my Grandma Betty.

It’s the goodbye I’m humbled to write to you, the woman who taught me to love fiercely, to bake with extra sugar and spice, and my very first curse word. With every spray of the pan and dusting of powdered sugar, I’m sending you a piece of my heart.

    Chapter One

Mom, look! Grams is back, Georgie said. He smiled, gap-toothed, before flipping a nickel-brushed steel cylinder in the air.

I can see that, dear. Sara placed the cylinder on their wooden coffee table. Please be careful, Georgie. You don’t want to dent her.

She’s here. She can tell me stories, and we can make cookies together, and I take her with me on my bike, and…

Yes, dear. Make sure you don’t lose her. You won’t get another one. And before you ask, no, you can’t bring her to school.

    Mom, he huffed.

    She raised an eyebrow.

He sighed and stuffed Grandma Lizzy in his backpack, running to his bedroom to clear a spot on his nightstand.
