What is needed to live in Portugal?
This is the most recurrent question and in a very simple way, to live in Portugal you need:
Valid passport;
Visa (or European citizenship);
Emotional and financial planning.
Sounds complicated? Don't worry. I will explain the step by step process for obtaining a visa, talk about the cost of living, and how much you must have to move to Portugal.
The first and most important step is to get a proper visa to live in Portugal (if you do not have citizenship of any European country). The most common types of visa for Portugal that you can apply for are:
Study Visa;
Work Visa;
Visa to Seek Employment;
Entrepreneur Visa;
StartUp Visa;
Own Income Visa (for people who have their own income, such as retirement or other income);
Golden Visa (for those who make some types of investments in Portugal, such as buying real estate).
If you have Portuguese (or other European Union) citizenship, you do not need a visa to live in Europe.
Remember that citizens from some countries that have an agreement with the Portuguese government can stay in Portugal for up to 90 days for tourism without a visa. However, to live, a visa is required and mandatory.
Where to live in Portugal?
Ranking the best cities to live in Portugal (or in any other country) is complicated because it all depends on your lifestyle. This ranking is based on quality of life, cost of living, and job opportunity.
Lisbon and metropolitan region;
Porto and metropolitan region;
Braga;
Leiria;
Coimbra;
Guimarães;
Faro;
Aveiro;
Viana do Castelo;
Évora;
Of course, you should consider the purpose of living in Portugal to choose the city for you. If you don't want to live in a big city, Braga might suit your lifestyle better. If you want to work with IT in Portugal, you will probably have to choose between Porto and Lisbon for example.
Porto é uma boa cidade para morar em Portugal.Porto, in the north of the country, has a slightly lower cost of living than Lisbon, but prices have been gradually increasing.
I recommend that, if possible, you come to Portugal to get to know the country and visit several cities before coming permanently. You need to feel the atmosphere of the place, to understand if Portugal is really the place to call home, and thus avoid that all the planning and investment will be in vain if you do not adapt.
How to live in Lisbon: the guide to living in the Portuguese capital
Ah, to live in Lisbon! What an incredible city. The Portuguese capital is the destination of many immigrants who choose the country to live. It has the benefits of a cosmopolitan, beautiful, cultural, and lively capital, but it is also synonymous with a high cost of living, especially if compared to other regions of the country.
In this text, I will present the main information you need to know to live in Lisbon, from the cost of living to the best regions to live in.
Lisbon is a pleasant city with a very busy nightlife. It is definitely a cosmopolitan destination with people from all over the world and varied cultural attractions, be it museums, theaters, nightclubs or concerts.
Living in Lisbon is, for me, being in a big city that seems small. Despite all the movement in the center, it is calm and safe.
Besides, it is a city with great air connection. Besides flights to the whole world, it also has connections with the main European cities. But, just like the big cities, Lisbon has some problems, such as traffic and high cost of living.
If you are thinking about living in Portugal, you should consider the cost of living as a starting point to begin financial planning while still in your country.
To help you in this process, I sought the main information about the cost of living in Portugal, more precisely in Lisbon, the country's capital and, consequently, the most expensive one to live in.
