‘So, you and Devin... you’ve been together for a few years now, right?’ Autumn shoots a sideways look across the table at her friend. ‘Do I hear wedding bells in the distance?’

Valerie laughs and shakes her head. She swirls a cherry by the stem through her vibrant orange cocktail glass, watching the liquid ripple. She glances around at the bar. The place is packed tonight. A local band plays over against the far wall, guitars gleaming under the lights, a distorted melody blaring through the air. A few semi-drunk patrons are already dancing to the tunes. Most people in the bar are standing or sitting, watching the band jam out some indistinct and unclear songs, whooping and hollering now and then. Valerie adjusts herself on the leather padding of the booth she occupies with Autumn and plucks the cherry from her glass.

‘I don’t know, to be honest. We haven’t, you know...’ She shrugs. ‘I mean, it’s not come up. Devin hasn’t said, uh, and I haven’t...’

‘Have you thought about it?’

Valerie fights the urge to squirm in discomfort. She could talk about anything, but discussing the finer details of her love life always made her feel uneasy. Autumn keeps her gaze on Valerie’s face, waiting for an answer.

‘Yeah. I mean... yeah.’ Valerie shrugs. ‘You know how it is, sometimes you wonder what it would be like to say yes to that question.’

‘And?’ Autumn prompts her friend with an eager nod.

‘And...’ Valerie blushes and tries to hide the smile that tugs at the corners of her lips. ‘Okay, it makes me feel really good. Really, really good. I can honestly see it working out.’

Autumn beams with pleasure and raises her half-full glass in salute. She says, ‘That’s my girl. Always knew you’d be the one to settle down first. You could get a puppy and white picket fence, all that good shit.’
