For Andy Hazucha,
I Wish He a Stone with Jagged Edge
Quartered-inch Plexiglas,
thirteen-by-sixteen-by-six,
within, an open book,
page one-hundred-thirty-nine
black font on white matte sheet:
Just past the doorway, snow-speckled boots,
right collapsed to its side
breath condensing again, in
again, in, again, page fogged
We must move along a voice says.

An Expression of Love
It was Black Friday, and everyone sat at the round tables scattered throughout the rectangular room. I sat at the table closest to the doorway near the lockers under the fluorescent light, fixture directly over my head. Donna tosses two stuffed-full, gallon-size freezer Ziplock bags on the table, sits in the chair, her back to the entrance, exhaling and shaking her head. She picks up the first bag, swinging it back then forward and releasing it to slide across the table, friction slowing it two inches from the edge in front of me.
That’s the new pattern I told you about. Is my hair a mess? Tell me if my hair’s a mess
She combs her hair in place with her fingers, then reaches, arms stretching the length of the table, fingers opening the interlocked seal.
Have one. Do you still have the one from last year?
Pulling two out, turning each over, she drops one in the bag and rests her elbow on the table, arm extends, crocheted snowman head pinched between finger and thumb. It’s cute. Isn’t it cute?
Adorable. Thank you.
I take the snowman and pin it to my vest. Last year she gifted me a Santa head crocheted with glittered white fuzzy yarn. When the cardboard boxes dirtied it, I threw it in the wash, removing it from the wad of spun wet clothes clustered
