The first time I flash a complete stranger, it’s an accident.

I go swimming every morning before work at 6am. It’s stupidly early, but I love it. The world is so quiet at that time of day, and I’ve seen some incredible sunrises, the sky turning vivid pink overhead with streaks of orange and purple.

When my alarm starts beeping at 5:30 I roll out of bed and grab my swimming costume from where it’s already laid out neatly over the back of my chair. I pull it on to save time getting changed at the pool, then put my tracksuit on over the top.

I walk briskly to the swimming pool, warming up my muscles on the go, listening to the sounds of the city just starting to wake up. I arrive in good time for my session, and stuff my clothes into a locker before slipping into the silky water of the pool.

It feels cool at first, but I know once I start swimming I’ll warm up. I pace myself, doing steady lengths up and down the pool, a neat efficient breaststroke. My arms and legs move independently, on autopilot, and my mind is free to wander.

Swimming is supposed to be very mindful, but I always find myself daydreaming about scenarios that leave me a little flustered, if you know what I mean. Imagining what would happen if the hot lifeguard walked into the changing room while I was naked – that kind of daydream.

The lifeguard in question blows his whistle to signal the end of the session, and I climb out of the pool along with the handful of other people who can be bothered to get up this early.
