It’s my first summer in Norway and I’m stuck in bed with a cold.

Typical. I became an au pair to see more of the world and experience Norwegian culture, and I was really looking forward to going away with my host family. Ingrid works as a lawyer and puts in long hours at the office, while her husband Lars does something in IT and often works from home. They’ve both been so kind to me – showing me around Oslo and making me feel welcome in their beautiful house, which is in a quiet leafy district of the city.

I have my own room on the top floor with a little en-suite. The walls slope quite steeply, being up in the loft space, but there are two large skylights that make it feel bright and open. When I lie on my bed I can’t see the rooftops around me – just brilliant blue sky.

I only have to work five hours a day, six days a week. My friends back in the UK don’t have it anywhere near as easy as I do. When I hear about their low paid jobs, terrible working conditions, and grumpy bosses, I feel sorry for them.

I don’t have to worry about any of that. My au pair contract is only for two years, but I’m going to make the most of it while I’m out here in Norway. Technically I don’t get a salary, I just get pocket money, but my room and board and most expenses are covered by Ingrid and Lars.

They’re incredibly generous. I never knew being an au pair would come with so many perks.
