Chapter One

      The atmosphere in Elena Morewood’s living room is somber. The curtains were drawn, casting a dim light across the room. The sound of rain tapping against the windows added to the gloomy mood. Elena, a 16-year-old girl with a pained expression, sat on the couch with her left hand tightly clutching her phone. Her gaze shifts to her phone and the photo of her late mother in a hospital bed. It was the only tangible reminder that her mother had been sick during the previous summer.

​Elena closed her eyes, tears spilling down her cheeks. She wiped them away with her wrist and let out a deep sigh. She just wants to forget the pain she feels, but it clings to her like a heavy cloak. Just then, she remembers the one person who had been there for her during those dark days: her best friend, Lucas.

​At that moment, he calls her from the kitchen. Elena’s heart leaps into her throat. She rises from the sofa and rushes to assist him, desperate for a distraction from the emptiness of forgetting when or how her mother passed away. Lucas is standing on the other side of the floating counter holding two steaming mugs of hot cocoa. He smiles weakly at Elena as he hands one to her. Lucas wraps an arm around her shoulders comfortingly, not saying a word as they walk back to the couch. They simply shared Elena’s silent grief. Together, they sat in quiet companionship until he finally broke the silence by asking if she wanted to talk about what had happened with her mother that summer.

​Elena hesitates. It was so hard for her to vocalize how much pain she was feeling.  She eventually narrated everything she remembers leading up to and during that fateful summer day when she sacrificed her hand to get rid of the Dark One’s mark in a ritual performed by their now-missing friend Raven. Until he found her that night, she didn’t even remember that her mother was already gone. Throughout it all, Lucas listened intently without interruption, providing support only when necessary through an understanding look or a gentle squeeze of Elena’s remaining hand.
